Chemical leak at pool part-owned by Olympian Rebecca Adlington leads to evacuation

Two people have suffered breathing difficulties after a chemical leak at a swimming pool part-owned by former Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington.

Firefighters were called on Saturday morning to Swim! in Oldbury after a chemical leak occurred in the plant room of the pool.

Ten people were evacuated from the building, including two who suffered breathing difficulties, according to the Press Association.

Two-time gold medal swimmer Adlington, 34, opened the facility in February alongside Olympians Steve Parry and Adrian Turner, and JD Gyms.

West Midlands fire service said: "The leak was contained to the building and posed no risk to the public.

"Two fire engines and our hazardous materials team responded, together with colleagues from the ambulance service.

"The first crew were at the scene within three minutes of being mobilised.

"Our teams are ventilating the building and our specialist officers are using air monitoring equipment to make sure the area is safe."

A Swim! spokesman said no one was hurt.

Ms Adlington, a two-time winner at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, called time on her career months after she had won two bronze medals at her home Olympics in London four years later.
