Cheryl has posted a touching birthday message honouring the late Sarah Harding.

The pop stars were two-fifths of Girls Aloud between 2002 and 2013 before moving onto other projects. Harding tragically passed away at the age of 39 this September.

On what would have been her 40th birthday yesterday (November 17), Cheryl posted a video montage of their time together on Instagram.

"Memories may be all we're left with, but they're enough to last a lifetime [star emoji] #Sarahs40th," she captioned it.

This sentiment was echoed by hundreds of fans, as one replied: "love this montage, such precious memories [heart emoji] Sarah will forever be in our thoughts, wishing her a heavenly 40th birthday, I know she's having a ball today up there."

"Happy Heavenly Birthday Beautiful Sarah.." and "How can someone so full of life and energy be gone? She will live on in the memories of all that loved her. Lots of love," read two more tributes.

Fellow Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts also shared on Instagram: "I know you're somewhere making trouble live one. Happy Earth birthday Sarah. Love, miss and thinking about you all the time.

"I feel your energy like you're still here. Wish we could have ran riot around town like we used to for your big 4.0 today! Cause a supernova up there electric girl."

Back when news hit of Harding's death, Cheryl posted a lengthy statement on social media.

She wrote: "Although we knew this day would arrive I am somehow still feeling at a loss for words that our stunning, unique, crazy, quirky, kind and soft hearted girl has departed.

"As I try to navigate my way through these painfully strange and horribly unfamiliar waves of disbelief & finality I am experiencing, I wanted to extend my condolences to all of our GA fans."
