The controversy over Cheryl's return to The X Factor last weekend rumbles on, with the star herself now hitting out at the "relentless abuse" she's received over the past two days.

The former X Factor judge was back on the ITV talent competition's stage on Sunday night (November 18) to perform her new single 'Love Made Me Do It', but the performance was widely panned in the tabloids for being awkward or too raunchy.

Cheryl hit back on Twitter on Tuesday (November 20), after telling her fans that she was certainly aware of their "lovely comments and support" amid all of the drama.

"I let a lot of things lie but the sheer level of unbalanced negativity towards me in the tabloid press these past few days has been quite frankly shocking and I need to address it," she added.

"This level of relentless abuse should not be tolerated in any walk of life."

In particular, Cheryl was understandably upset over the scrutiny about her "appearance", "body size" and "shape" in the discussion, calling it all "totally uncalled for".

The singer argued that such body-shaming was only giving "trolls a bigger voice and platform" at a time when cyber-bullying is such a serious issue.

In the end, Cheryl was defiant as she assured her critics: "I did watch my performance back and I LOVED IT!"

Aside from the press coverage, Cheryl's return to The X Factor did receive 15 complaints complaints to broadcasting regulator Ofcom earlier this week because the raunchy routine aired pre-watershed.

The X Factor seems unlikely to cause as much controversy this week when it welcomes ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for a night dedicated to the Swedish pop icons.

ITV airs The X Factor on Saturdays and Sundays.
