The X Factor viewers hit out at “painful” Cheryl as she made her comeback with Love Made Me Do It.

The Geordie singer, who recently released her first track in four years, performed on Sunday night’s results show before two singers battled for survival.

But many were left less than impressed with her performance, branding it “painful” and telling her to “give up”.

One wrote: “Did we really need a Cheryl come back? This is awful.. lol. #XFactor.”

A second tweeted: “This Cheryl performance is incredibly awkward. At least she’s not miming I guess? #xfactor.”

A third wrote: “Cheryl’s performance is painful to watch / listen to #xfactor.”

However, other fans were so excited to see Cheryl back on stage, hailing the performance “perfect” and flooding social media with love for the former Girls Aloud star.

One wrote: “@CherylOfficial on @TheXFactor !! Oh my god what a queen I love her !!#XFactor How unreal does she looo aswell !! #LoveMadeMeDoIt

Another said: “Great to have the Nation’s sweetheart back on our TV screens #Cheryl #XFactor.”

A third posted: “Good luck @CherylOfficial in pet!!!!! Watching from me couch now !!! Can’t wait #xfactor #LoveMadeMeDoIt.”

Cheryl, 35, released Love Made Me Do It earlier in November just days after she was forced to deny one of the lyrics was about her ex Liam Payne.

The star split from Payne, with whom she has a one-year-old son Bear, earlier this year but denies that her “fall in love with every f*****” lyric is about him or any previous relationships.

Elsewhere on Sunday night’s show, Tom Walker made his debut on the ITV show as he performed Leave a Light On.

The X Factor continues Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
