Cheryl has admitted that the public statement she released following her split from Liam Payne was “cringeworthy”, after she was mocked by Piers Morgan.

The former Girls Aloud star told the Good Morning Britain host that the joint statement the pair put out last month was embarrassing, but insisted she doesn’t “hate” the father of her son Bear.

In his Daily Mail column, Morgan revealed that the pop star had texted him after he slammed their split announcement live on air, during which he questioned why celebrities always say they still love each other despite breaking up.

“It’s always weird when celebrity couples split up saying they have so much love for each other,” he said. “If they love each other that much, why are they splitting up? They should be more honest and just say, “We hate each other.”’

Cheryl reportedly messaged him moments later to say: “I’m so sorry you didn’t like my statement, Piers – perhaps I should have texted you the intimate details in chronological order as it unfolded.”

After apologising when he felt a “rare pang of guilt”, Cheryl informed Morgan that she was “just messing”.

She added: “I’m just messing. I hate those kinds of statements too, so cringeworthy. But we don’t hate each other. It just didn’t work out.”

After being plagued with split rumours at the beginning of the year, the couple finally announced their break up at the beginning of July.

Their joint statement read: “We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family."

Cheryl asked for fans to respect the privacy of their one-year-old son Bear who they welcomed last March.

She finished: "Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together."
