Chesapeake Shores will be missing major star Jesse Metcalfe in its next season, as the actor has decided to step down from his role as Trace Riley on the Hallmark Channel drama.
Metcalfe has played singer-songwriter Trace on the family drama since it began in 2016 but Hallmark has confirmed that the actor, who has also starred in Desperate Housewives, will be departing early in its upcoming fifth season when it airs this summer.
However, it isn't all bad news for fans as it has been confirmed that Trace's storyline will be wrapped up before he leaves, so he should hopefully receive a satisfying exit.
"A new season of Hallmark Channel's highly popular scripted series, Chesapeake Shores, is returning this summer," Hallmark Channel told Deadline in a statement.
"Jesse Metcalfe, who plays Trace Riley, has decided to leave the show. His character's storyline will wrap up early in season five.
"Jesse is a valued member of the Crown Media family; we look forward to continuing to work with him on projects, including original movies on Hallmark Channel, as well as his Hallmark Movies & Mysteries' movie series, Martha's Vineyard Mysteries, the next instalment of which premieres on May 16. In addition, we are currently in development on another movie in the series."
Trace's exit suggests that his romance with Abby O'Brien (Meghan Ory) may not have a happy ending. Trace and Abby were high-school sweethearts who rekindled their relationship when Abby returned home following the end of her marriage, although their love affair has been anything but straightforward.
The last time we saw the pair, in September 2019's season four finale, Trace and Abby appeared to get back together after spending the season pursuing other love interests, but Metcalfe's exit could mean that their reunion is short-lived.
Season five of Chesapeake Shores, which will be made up of 10 episodes, will also feature the returns of Megan (Barbara Niven), Jess (Laci J Mailey), Bree (Emilie Ullerup), Kevin (Brendan Penny), Connor (Andrew Francis) and Mick (Treat Williams).
Chesapeake Shore airs on the Hallmark Channel in the US and is available to watch on Netflix in the UK.
