The toll charge for the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges is the eighth most expensive in the UK, according to a latest study. Drivers using both bridges currently have to pay £2 for a single crossing.

The UK's most expensive toll road, according to research compiled by Moneybarn Car Finance, is the M6 Toll in the West Midlands. Using all three zones sets motorists back £9.70 in total.

Two zones comes at a cost of £8 while one is priced at £6.20. That means the M6 Toll takes the three top spots for the most costly toll roads.

Also among the top ten is the Mersey Tunnels, Dartford Crossing and Humber Bridge. It's almost seven years since the £600m Mersey Gateway Bridge linking Runcorn and Widnes first opened to traffic.

After the launch, the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn closed for refurbishment. When it eventually reopened in early 2021, a controversial toll charge was placed on the previously free crossing.
