Cheshire family devastated as mum, 49, given just weeks to live
A Cheshire mum-of-three has been given just weeks to live after receiving an ‘absolutely devastating’ cancer diagnosis. Sharon Bennett, 49, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2023.
Sharon, from Crewe, underwent surgery eight weeks ago after a course of chemotherapy. Eldest daughter Natasha Austin, 31, said: “She was supposed to just wait for the surgery to heal and then undergo radiotherapy to make sure there were no rogue cancer cells.
"Unfortunately, she ended up in A&E three weeks ago with severe headaches, and they did a CT scan which showed leptomeningeal cancer.”
The cancer affects the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Prognosis is poor for people with leptomeningeal cancer, and Sharon has been given just weeks to live.
Natasha, from Nantwich, has started a fundraising page for Sharon, who is also mother to 20-year-old Caley and seven-year-old Maya, to support the children when she is no longer around.
“It has been absolutely devastating,” said Natasha. “It’s going to be difficult when she’s not here.
“Cayley will become Maya’s legal guardian, and she’s not working at the moment. She had to quit her job as a carer when my mum became really poorly from chemotherapy.”
Natasha, who is mother to Sharon’s two grandchildren, added: “I want to make sure Cayley and Maya are looked after."
