On Chesil Beach: See Saoirse Ronan in a tortured romance in the film's trailer

Saoirse Ronan has taken on the role of newlywed in the forthcoming trailer for On Chesil Beach.

The Oscar-nominated actress plays a rather different character in the period piece than her leading role in Lady Bird where she portrays a free-spirited teen in the early aughts dealing with the highs and lows of family and high school.

The trailer for On Chesil Beach features sexism, class differences and a story of falling in love and having doubts.

The film takes place in 1962 and Ronan stars as Florence Ponting: an upper-class woman who marries a man named Edward (Billy Howe) from a working class background.

It's something her family - played by Emily Watson and Samuel West - disapprove of greatly.

But at the centre of their story is the idea of sexual pressure and societal judgments.

In the film, Florence is determined to rebel against her aristocratic upbringing and fights against the idea of a traditional marriage.

As a result, Florence's desires end up testing her bond with Edward.

On Chesil Beach is based on the 2007 novella by Ian McEwan.

Ronan previously starred in the film adaptation of McEwan's Atonement back in 2007

First time feature-director Dominic Cooke took the reigns on the film adaptation.

On Chesil Beach first debuted at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

It will have a limited release via Bleecker Street starting May 18.
