"It's a single punch that results in very, very significant injuries. The impact on the victim is very significant." The court was told that Cowely had pleaded guilty, was remorseful, had on past convictions and was in full-time employment.
Adjourning the case for the preparation of a pre-sentence report, District Judge Natalie Wortley said: "The injuries and impact on the victim were very significant. This is a case that might ultimately be sent to the crown court for sentence.
"Before that, however, I'm ordering a pre-sentence report and I will list it for sentence in this court. All options are going to be open, including custody. You will need to go to Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on February 19 at 10am to be sentenced.
"In the meantime, you will need to speak to the Probation Service."
