Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vs. Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica

lightning lap driver commentary
Chevy Corvette Z06 vs. Lamborghini Huracán TecnicaCar and Driver

Each year at Lightning Lap, our drivers take extra care to space themselves out over the 4.1 miles of Virginia International Raceway's Grand Course. The last thing you want while setting a hot lap is to get blocked by a slower car. This necessity means we seldom see cars at speed in close proximity.

That didn't happen at Lightning Lap 16.

While driver David Beard was out improving his time in the 2023 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica, K.C. Colwell headed out in the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The Corvette closed in on the Huracán near the back straight, where Colwell assumed the Huracán was finishing its session. Beard didn't notice the Corvette behind him—the roll cage limits the Huracán's rear visibility. Both drivers then went on to set their fastest lap times, separated at the finish line by little more than a second.

After watching the footage repeatedly, we were eager to hear the perspectives of both drivers and share their experience with you. We also visualized the number of seconds separating the two vehicles while they were on track, so you can see the distance the Huracán gains on the straight and the time the Corvette takes back in braking and through corners.
