It's any avid host's dream: You're given a 19th-century Parisian apartment and carte blanche to turn it into the ultimate party spot. Last week, as the design world flocked to Paris for the annual Deco Off design fair, such was the case for Next Wave designer Sean Leffers. He partnered with rug dealer Marc Phillips and fabric house Castel to throw one very incredible party.

The theme? Paris-meets-Morocco, inspired by the dual influences of the apartment: the space boasts a boiserie commissioned for Marie Antoinette's royal residence at Marly and Marc Phillips new Modern Moroccan rug collection. It's a mix of styles that spoke to Leffers' penchant for layering. "For me, the best rooms in the world incorporate multiple centuries, styles, and cultures," says the designer. "Remember, everything was new once. Mixing in contemporary pieces is an exciting way of supporting living artists and designers and will make your space feel relevant and fresh."

To offset the white boiserie, Leffers used Castel's graphic Manuel pattern in a mustard color on pillows throughout the space, and selected similarly graphic rugs from Marc Phillips to add warmth to the floors. "The contemporary patterns gives the space excitement, a more relaxed attitude, and brings it into the 21st century," he explains.

The room's literal centerpiece, though, is an oversized ottoman that practically begs for a relaxed, cocktail party chatter. Designed by Dutch designer Josephus Thimister, the piece was inspired by Madame de Pompadour—but is constructed in a surprisingly accessible fashion: "The piece is actually two IKEA beds placed together," explains Leffers. "It's such a clever way to make an elegant piece in an affordable way."

This high-low mix is Leffers's design mantra in action: "The fundamental rules of putting your room together stay the same whether you’re working with antiques, contemporary furniture or a mix. As long as you are paying attention to proportion, functionality, and balancing color, pattern, and texture—you can incorporate anything you like."

Dorm room dwellers: Please take note and push the beds together for a very chic spin to your next pre-game.
