Child dies after flat fire in Barking, east London

An 11-year-old boy has died in a flat fire in east London.

The Metropolitan Police said the boy was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire in Stern Close, Barking.

Two more children and two adults were taken to hospital, none were in a life-threatening condition, police said.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at around 3.25am on Tuesday.

The three-room flat on the second floor of the building was "destroyed" by the flames, they said.

The other four people had left the flat before crews arrived and were taken to hospital.

Another man was treated by paramedics at the scene.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the brigade and the Metropolitan Police.

So far it does not appear to be suspicious, the police said.
