An infant girl was killed and more than 60 people were injured when softball-sized hail pummeled the town of La Bisbal d’Emporda in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region on Tuesday, August 30, local media reported.
The publicly-owned Catalunya Radio station reported that a 20-month-old girl struck by hail in La Bisbal d’Emporda had died of her injuries in Josep Trueta Hospital.
This footage from Lluis Riba shows hail falling in La Bisbal d’Emporda on Tuesday evening.
Some of the hail measured up to 10 cm (3.9 inches) in diameter and was the largest recorded in the region since 2002, the Meteorological Service of Catalonia said.
According to El Punt, a newspaper in Girona, people’s injuries included cuts from shattered glass, bruising from the impact of the hail, and minor fractures. Credit: Lluis Riba via Storyful
