Yahoo News Child rapist who filmed his abuse of girl, 5, may never be released from prison
A man who filmed himself raping a five-year-old girl he was babysitting may spend the rest of his life behind bars.
William Rigby presents “a risk to the public” and was given a lifelong restriction – similar to a life sentence – by a judge at the High Court in Glasgow.
The 53-year-old filmed the rape of his victim while he was babysitting her at her home in Helensburgh, Arygll and Bute, on 11 October last year.
The girl told her mother what had happened as soon as she returned home at midnight but Rigby told her the child had “misunderstood what happened”.
Judge Lady Valerie Stacey told Rigby that he will be detained for seven years after the court heard he had abused other girls.
However, she warned him that he may remain behind bars for the rest of his life.
Addressing the detention of seven years, she said: “That does not mean you will be released then. It may be you are never released. You will be in prison until there is any hope of you not being a danger to young girls.
“You are guilty of a horrible catalogue of offences. What you did was betray the trust of a family and what you did harmed these children.
“You present a risk to the public and are likely to continue to do so even after work is done with you.”
Police found 34 indecent images of children during their investigation of Rigby, who was also found to have preyed on two girls, aged four and six, between 2006 and 2018.
Solicitor advocate Douglas Thomson, defending, said: “He now recognises there was manipulation of the children and his actions will have consequences for them for many years to come.
“When he is released into the community, if ever, he will be monitored and subject to the most stringent conditions.”
A relative of the girl he raped shouted “die” at Rigby as he was sentenced.
