Children among 22 dead as truck crashes in Turkey

At least 22 migrants, including children, have died after the truck they were travelling in drove off a bridge in Turkey.

Video footage showed the wreckage of the destroyed vehicle upside down in a waterway several metres below the road.

Bodies covered in blankets and foil sheets surrounded the crumpled truck and personal items such as shoes could be seen scattered on the floor.

The migrants' luggage was piled up in one corner next to the scene of the accident, which is near Izmir airport in the west of the country.

The country's official news agency said 13 people have been injured in the crash and were being treated in nearby hospitals.

Turkish media reported the driver was among the injured and said in his initial statement to police that a white car had swerved in front of him.

Turkish authorities have launched an investigation.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants travel to the Turkish coast in their journey to reach neighbouring Greece, which is a member of the European Union.

A deal with the EU in 2016 to send those migrants back to Turkey significantly curbed the number of border crossings but many desperate migrants still attempt the journey.

According to UN figures, more than 24,500 migrants have arrived in Greece by sea so far this year, with 118 people losing their lives via this route.
