Chile Raises Alert Level as Activity at Villarrica Volcano Increases

Chilean authorities raised the alert level for the Villarrica volcano from yellow to orange, the second-highest level, in response to a surge in activity on Sunday, September 24.

Footage here, from the emergency and defense service of the Araucania region, showed the central vent of Villarrica from the air, where lava can be seen.

Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service, Sernageomin, said that “an exhaustive analysis by the professionals of our National Volcanic Surveillance Network (RNVV) […] shows an abnormal activity of the massif, which justifies the change of technical alert to orange.”

According to local news reports on Sunday, authorities evacuated around 80 people due to eruption risk. Credit: @JdnAraucania via Storyful
