China: Drowning Children Saved From Icy River

Two young children who were drowning in a frozen river have been rescued by police and passers-by in China.

The boy and girl, aged seven and six, fell into the water when the ice gave way in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province.

A nearby resident saw the children struggling in the river and rushed to the scene with her husband.

Passers-by who heard the shout for help also made their way to the spot and jumped into the icy water to rescue them.

The pair were finally brought to safety one after the other.

One of the people who took part in the rescue was known as Mr Zhang.

When asked about the accident, he said he did not think about his personal safety.

"Well, I have to save them as a family only has one or two children. Besides it is not only me but lots of people pitched in," said Mr Zhang.

The body temperature of the two children has returned to normal and their condition is improving, according to doctors.
