Sleep-deprived families are being subjected to 'Chinese water torture' - by the constant clanging of a loose manhole cover. They are being kept awake at night by the sound of vehicles hitting the manhole cover on High Street, Sandyford.

But the constant clanging now looks set to end - with Severn Trent Water starting repairs from Monday 18 November.

Relieved resident Suzie Parker said: “The noise gets a lot worse at rush-hour. However at night you can just hear cars going over it. The sooner it gets fixed the better.”

Sandyford and Goldenhill Residents' Association and ward councillor Chandra Kenneganti have been campaigning for the issue to be fixed. There had been fears that it would not be fixed until February.

A residents' association spokesman said: "This is repeated noise pollution that residents class as a form of Chinese water torture."

It is estimated that as many as 1,000 cars a day travel along Sandyford High Street.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We are sorry for the disruption residents are having due to a faulty manhole cover. The work to fix this is due to start on 18 November and will be complete the following day. Due to traffic on the road during the day, and taking advice from the local council, the works will be done overnight. We’re sorry for the inconvenience, however we will do our best to minimise this and will be contacting those who may be affected prior to the works starting.”
