American Horror Story star Chloe Sevigny has slammed the practice of self-promotion on social media networks.

The actress, who played grief-stricken mother-turned-vampire Alex Lowe on American Horror Story's fifth season Hotel, has dismissed selfie-takers and outfit posters and called the self-promotion "disgusting".

"I'm 42 and I'm already famous – why would I self-promote myself like that? It's disgusting," she told Net-A-Porter.

"I don't court mainstream success, so [the tabloids] have a hard time understanding me. It's impossible for me to go somewhere and not be judged."

Sevigny continued to describe the whole tabloid culture as "a culture of darkness".

"Everybody is a critic," she added. "Susan Sarandon and Katy Perry get s**t from liberals and conservatives and I'm horrified at the insults that Lena Dunham has to put up with."

During the interview, Sevigny also revealed her trademark way of dealing with the trolls.

"I go onto their profile, after they have said something mean, and I 'like' a picture," she added. "It humanizes me. And I've actually had people then apologise for what they said."

The actress can next be seen starring alongside Kristen Stewart in psychological thriller Lizzie. The movie is one in a string of recent TV and film adaptations based on the true story of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of killing her father and stepmother in the late 19th century.

Sevigny will take on the lead role of Lizzie, while Stewart plays maid Bridget Sullivan, who is alleged to have had a romance with Borden.

"[Kristen is] someone who loves her craft," Sevigny added.

"At that age, I didn't have the confidence to fight for my ideas like she does. I learned a lot from her – and she's 27 years old."
