She also said there was evidence the two had an ‘existing relationship’.

Ms Ayling said she was sedated and put in the boot of a car after being tricked into going to a fake photoshoot in Milan in July, before being held in a farmhouse in Turin.

She said she was to be sold online by the gang, known as ‘Black Death’, as a sex slave.

Herba claims he did not knowingly take part in any crime, his lawyer said.

His lawyer will ask for the trial in Milan to be adjourned on Wednesday until Herba’s brother is present so they can defend themselves together.

Ms Ayling has maintained she was kidnapped, despite going shoe shopping and having breakfast with Herba before her release.

In September, she said she is writing a book about what happened.
