Chris Brown has opened up about the moment he punched his then girlfriend Rihanna, saying she was “spitting blood”.

Brown said he will forever be ‘haunted’ by the image of her injured face after a fight broke out between the couple on the night of February 8, 2009.

The 28-year-old singer recalled the incident in a new clip for his documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life, saying things turned violent after a woman he had previously had a fling with turned up at a pre-Grammy’s party he was at with Rihanna.

Recalling their confrontation later that evening, Brown revealed: “[Rihanna] starts going off, she throws the phone, ‘I hate you!’, whatever, whatever, she starts hitting me, we’re in a little Lamborghini, you know she’s fighting me.

“Like I remember she tried to kick me, just like her beating s***, but then I really hit her.

“With a closed fist, like I punched her, and it busted her lip, and when I saw it I was in shock, I was like ‘f***, why did I hit her like that?’”

He continued: “So from there she’s spitting blood in my face, it raised me even more. It’s a real fight in the car, and we driving in the street.

“I'm like ‘yo, we tripping, what the f***, what are we doing?’ She tried to grab for my phone, and I’m not giving her my phone, to throw it out the window.”

Brown said he tried to calm the situation, but Rihanna grabbed his crotch, bit his arm and screamed for help, claiming she was fearing for her life.

“I'm just trying to resolve the situation, I'm not trying to fight any further, like I love her, I don't want to hurt my girlfriend,” he said.

“She takes the keys out of the car... and fakes it like she throws them out of the window.

“I get out the car and I’m looking for the keys and somebody yelled and she yells out her door, ‘Help, he’s trying to kill me.’”

Brown also claimed that their relationship had been violent prior to the incident in February and alleged that Rihanna had hit him during previous arguments.

Brown, who previously said he felt like a monster after assaulting the Diamonds singer, was sentenced to five years of probation, a year of domestic violence counselling, and six months of community service.
