Chris Eubank Jr mocked Billy Joe Saunders following his old rival’s defeat by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez as he laid down his own challenge to the Mexican pound-for-pound king.

Saunders was pulled out of his super-middleweight title unification fight in Arlington, Texas on Saturday night after a suspected eye socket fracture sustained during an eighth-round onslaught left him unable to see.

The defeat was the very first of the 30-year-old’s 31-fight professional career and saw him lose his WBO belt, with Canelo - who already held the WBA (Super) and WBC gold after victory over Callum Smith in December - now hoping to face IBF champion Caleb Plant in an undisputed 168-pound showdown later this year.

And despite that nasty injury, Eubank Jr evidently could not resist making fun out of a long-time adversary against whom he suffered his own first career defeat back in 2014.

The former IBO super-middleweight champion posted a video to his Instagram stories in which he can be seen laughing hysterically while watching the end of Saturday’s contest.

“What a wet bag!” he says to the camera before adding: “Give me the 10 grand baby, give me the 10 grand.”

Earlier this week, Eubank Jr posted a picture of a betting slip that revealed he had wagered £10,000 on Canelo stopping Saunders alongside the message: “The bet has been placed!

“Billy Schmoe Saunders to get cleaned out by Canelo Alvarez this Saturday. Oh... & the 10k I stand to win will all go to charity.”

Promoter Kalle Sauerland recently spoke of a potential rematch against Saunders and a fight with Canelo as possible future options for Eubank Jr, who returned to the ring after a 17-month absence on the Chisora-Parker undercard in Manchester last weekend with a unanimous decision win over Marcus Morrison.

‘Next Gen’ - now trained by the legendary Roy Jones Jr - is currently campaigning back down at middleweight, though clearly fancies his chances of succeeding where seven others have now failed in terms of British fighters aiming to take down Canelo.

“Canelo if you want a Brit to give you a real fight... I’m ready & waiting,” Eubank Jr tweeted.
