British cyclist Chris Froome made history on Sunday when he won his third Tour de France.

The Team Sky rider had a lead of over 4 minutes on Frenchman Romain Bardet following a wet penultimate stage in the Alps.

Froome — who has fallen off the bike a couple of times this year and won a couple of stages — was not tested on the final stage in Paris. Stage glory went to German sprinter André Greipel.

Froome also won the Tour de France in 2013 and 2015.

This year, Froome will take home €500,000 (£417,000) in prize money for his efforts, which is the most he's ever won at the event, according to Total Sportek. Tradition dictates that Froome share the money with his team and support staff. His contract with Sky is said to be worth about €4 million annually.

Tour de France prize money has gone up by around 8% this year and there is a total of €2.29 million (£1.98 million) being awarded to riders across the field.

But prize money for the 3,535km three-week race is still relatively low compared to other large sporting events like Wimbledon, where the winners receive a £2 million payout.
