Chris Hughes cries on 'This Morning' talking about Little Mix girlfriend Jesy Nelson's troll abuse

Former Love Island contestant Chris Hughes burst into tears in This Morning as he discussed the trolling of his girlfriend, Little Mix star Jesy Nelson.

The 28-year-old singer took part in BBC documentary Odd One Out in September in which she confessed she had tried to kill herself because she was brought to such a low point by online trolls.

Hughes told Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “She rang me, bless her, about 10 minutes after the documentary aired and she was just so overwhelmed and she just broke down on the phone to me. She’s a strong girl now, she’s extremely strong.”

Hughes then broke down in tears himself saying: “I don’t know why, but I get so emotional when I’m speaking about it.”

He went on: “I’ve had my school teachers show it [Jesy’s documentary] in their schools already. But I think the beauty of that documentary is that it doesn’t just help people who are going through that struggle online, it helps the elder generation - the parents to understand the dangers of social media.”

Choking back more tears Hughes added: “She’s so brave and so strong, she didn’t deserve any of that. She’s fantastic.”

The reality TV star - who took part in dating show Love Island in 2017 - was on the ITV daytime show to discuss his brother Ben’s successful battle against testicular cancer. Ben was diagnosed after checking himself as a result of Chris taking part in a segment on This Morning last year advising male viewers how to check their themselves for cancer.

Chris said: “I think the beautiful thing about this modern society is that there is always someone you can talk to… just opening up is a brave thing to do and such a beneficial thing to do.

“I think until you really speak to someone, you don’t really realise how much weight that lifts off your shoulders… I’ve struggled in the past with various things, whether it’s anxiety, feeling low or feeling down.”

Hughes’ appearance on the show was in order to help raise awareness for charity initiative Movember.
