Fulham striker Chris Martin shrugged off being booed by Scotland fans to score a late winner against Slovenia and keep Gordon Strachan in a job.

Martin came on as a substitute to jeers but scored in the 88th minute to give Scotland a 1-0 win and keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Under-fire Strachan described the game at Hampden Park as a "must-win" and had been facing the sack before Martin, who is on loan at Fulham from Derby, netted to lift Scotland to within two points of second-placed Slovakia in Group F.

Martin, 28, said he was unaware of the boos when he came on with eight minutes remaining.

He said: "I was only made aware of it after the game.

"I do not really pay too much attention to that, I was just delighted for the lads and for the manager as well. He has shown faith in me."
