Christie Brinkley required emergency surgery after breaking her arm in rehearsals for Dancing With The Stars.

The 65-year-old model and original Uptown Girl tumbled out of the US dance competition before it even began - and was replaced at the last minute by her 21-year-old model daughter Sailor Brinkley-Cook.

Brinkley revealed on Instagram: “I just broke my arm into a 1000 pieces requiring surgery with a metal plate and screws to hold my arm together.

She added: “Shattering my arm was quite literally a crushing disappointment, i never ever want to let anyone down...so I looked for a silver lining and I think I found one that is is solid gold! Sailor!

“But my student Sailor would have to overcome serious stage fright! Sailor always meets her challenges head on and realised she did not want to be defined by her fears so with just hours to learn my routine she is turning my defeat or should I say two left feat into her own victory of courage!”

Brinkley - ex-wife of singer Billy Joel - persuaded her daughter to step in at the eleventh hour and perform on Dancing With The Stars dancing the Samba with her partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy, with just hours to go before the opening show.

Sailor - Brinkley’s youngest child with her fourth husband, architect Peter Cook - even fitted into her mother’s costume.

She told Good Morning America: “I'm doing this mostly for my mom! I just want to make her happy and make her proud.

“She loved doing this, she loves dancing and she loves performing and getting hurt was her worst nightmare.”

Brinkley has had a metal plate fitted in her right arm and was present in the live audience to support Sailor in the competition.

The model is best known for her role in ex-husband Billy Joel’s music video for Uptown Girl.

The 28th series of Dancing With The Stars also features Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek among this year’s celebrity line-up.
