'Christmas is back on!' Georgia 'Toff' Toffolo released from Maldives immigration detention centre

Georgia Toffolo has declared “Christmas is back on” after being released from a terrifying ordeal at a Maldives airport detention centre.

The Made In Chelsea star had jetted off for a relaxing festive break in the Indian Ocean with her boyfriend, but her dream trip turned into a nightmare over an issue with a damaged passport.

She posted a tearful video to Instagram over the weekend from Male airport, explaining she had been held for hours over missing pages from her passport, was all alone, and was not being allowed to leave without replacement documents.

But luckily for Toff, the story had a happy Christmas ending after the Foreign Office intervened on her behalf to get her released and on the way to enjoying her luxury holiday.

She posted a smiling holiday selfie on Instagram thanking the airport officials for their kindness and joking: “Oddly excited for the reunion when I leave.”

Toff said that she had cried in the airport for nine hours at the idea of spending the foreseeable future in an immigration detention centre.

She added: “It is such a privilege to have a following on social media – people can hear me.

“What if I didn’t have a social media following? I can’t bear to think of another girl in the situation I found myself in where no one can hear you.”

But she cheerfully finished: “Toff’s Christmas is back on.”

The 25-year-old former I’m A Celebrity winner also told The Sun: “It was terrifying... The next thing I knew I was taken away from the airport to a stack of three shipping containers where they detain people – and told me I would be there for four days.”

She explained that she had been made to book an extremely expensive return flight to the UK, but then told she couldn’t board the plane without replacement documents.

Toff said she begged to be allowed to contact the embassy, but was told she was looking at a couple of nights in the detention centre as the office would be closed on a Saturday.

She said: “It was very intimidating, male-dominated and scary – I had no idea what to do. I still feel sick at the thought of it all.”
