Christmas movies London 2018: The festive film screenings you need to see this year

Christmas is a time for relaxing, eating your bodyweight in roast turkey and Quality Street, and — of course — snuggling up with a festive film or two.

There are plenty of Christmas film screenings taking place this winter, and many places in London are going all out to ensure memorable cinematic experiences.

There are a number of immersive events to look forward to, while some are even welcoming live orchestras to accompany screenings.

So, sit back, enjoy a mulled wine and enjoy some of the best Christmas film screenings in London this year.

Christmas at the Prince Charles Cinema

The Prince Charles hosts some of the most unusual and enjoyable screenings in London all year round, like regular showings of the infamously terrible cult classic The Room and exhaustive Game of Thrones marathons. Things are no different this Christmas. The Leicester Square venue has two programmes for Christmas — split into naughty and nice lists — with a mix of traditional and untraditional festive flicks alike on offer. Even better, the best Christmas film ever, It’s A Wonderful Life, is being shown twice a day until December 24.

Neighbourhood Cinema's Frozen Island

The Tropicana Beach Club in Covent Garden has been transformed into a winter wonderland this year, with the launch of Neighbourhood Cinema’s Frozen Island. Every Sunday the space will be transformed for a festive programme, celebrating the best Christmas movies of the past 40 years. It’s not all Christmas classics being shown either — choices like Cool Runnings and Edward Scissorhands are also getting an airing.

Backyard Cinema’s Snowman experience, Winter Wonderland

It’s been 40 years since Raymond Brigg’s stunning book The Snowman was first published, and Winter Wonderland is celebrating by showing the 1982 animated adaptation every day in Hyde Park. Backyard Cinema are hosting the screenings, which are followed by a multi-sensory Christmas trail. The immersive experiences take place at 20 minute intervals every day except Christmas Day, from November 22 to January 6.

The event will see Richard Curtis’s romcom screened alongside an orchestra, who will recreate the festive score from Craig Armstrong. You may have seen it many times before, but never like this.
