Christmas present police tell mum and dad not to buy as parents warned 'think twice'
Police have warned parents to "think twice" before buying their children an e-scooter for Christmas. Warwickshire Police said anyone caught riding an e-scooter illegally will have their motorized machines "seized and crushed".
It is not currently possible to get insurance for privately owned e-scooters. That means it's illegal to use them on roads as well as other public places such as parks, pavements and shopping centres.
There are only limited circumstances in which they can be ridden legally - such as by hiring one through schemes which includes via Beryl in Birmingham. E-scooters can also be used on private land - but permission is needed from the landowner.

PC Jonny Walker, from Nuneaton and Bedworth Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “As well as being illegal, riding an e-scooter is also dangerous both to the person riding it and members of the public. When we talk to our communities, they describe e-scooters as a blight on the streets.
"In the new year we’ll be running operations targeting e-scooters being ridden illegally and we won’t hesitate to seize them.”
A spokesperson for Warwickshire Police added: "Our officers will be carrying out operations in the new year where e-scooters being ridden illegally will be seized and crushed."
