Christmas railway experience with Santa and singing polar bears
East Lancashire Railway’s Santa Specials have returned for the Christmas season. Families can hop onboard for a trip through Irwell Valley alongside festive characters, entertainement and surprises.
The train takes off from Greater Manchester's Bury Bolton Street Station which has been transformed into a winter wonderland. Before guests step on board, they can chat with Mrs Claus and the talking Christmas tree, or sing along with the carolling polar bears.
The steam train will then set off to Rawtenstall and back on an approximately 80-minute round trip. The experience is filled with Christmas characters, Santa delivering gifts, and a brass band performing classic festive music.

There are special SEND sessions for a relaxed, friendly environment offering all of the same activities with adjustments. These include reduced visual stimuli to help minimise sensory overwhelm and chaperoned outdoor access for those who may need to avoid the footbridge and more.
Mike Kelly, chairman of East Lancashire Railway, said: “We’re delighted to bring back our SEND Santa Specials, designed specifically for families who want an inclusive Christmas experience. Seeing so many families enjoy a touch of Christmas magic last year was incredibly rewarding and has led to us introducing even more trains for this year's festive period.
“We’re proud to make this event accessible to SEND families, ensuring everyone can participate in the festivities without sacrificing any part of the experience.” You can book your place here.
