A CITY centre underpass was cordoned off while police officers carried out an extensive investigation.

Essex Police were called to St Botolph’s Circus, in Colchester, following reports of an incident during the early hours of this morning.

Officers attended the scene, located underneath the roundabout near opposite Colchester Town train station, before putting a cordon in place.

Eyewitnesses Sabrina Stephens and Martin Hodson said they saw police tape and police officers stationed at both entrances to walkway.

After conducting a thorough investigation the police eventually concluded no criminal offences had taken place.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We were contacted after reports about a possible incident in the early hours of this morning in St Botolph’s Circus.

“We cordoned off part of the area and carried out extensive enquiries. Those enquiries have enabled us to determine that no offences have taken place.

“We would like to thank members of the public for their patience with us during this time.”
