Network companies are responsible for maintaining supply on the grid and fixing power cuts. For south and mid-Wales, this is the National Grid and SP Energy Networks for North Wales.

You may be entitled to compensation if your electricity or gas supply goes off. The amount you can claim depends on whether the cut was planned, how long it lasted, or if it was the network company’s fault.

Compensation for power cuts in severe weather

The level of compensation you are entitled to depends on the category of the severe weather, and how long you were left without a power supply.

Storm category 1

You can get £85 if your power has been cut off for 24 hours.

Compensation for power cuts in normal weather

If your power is cut off, your local network company has either 12 or 24 hours to restore supplies. How long that takes depends on how many homes are affected by a single fault.

Power cut to less than 5,000 homes

If you are cut off for 12 hours or more, you can claim £95 as a domestic customer or £180 as a non-domestic customer. You can get a further £40 for each additional 12 hours of being off supply.
