Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has crushed any dreams that we might see Lando Calrissian in the movie.

Fans had been hoping that Lando (Billy Dee Williams) would make a cameo after the trailers for The Last Jedi have had echoes to The Empire Strikes Back, the movie that marked the first appearance of Lando.

However, Johnson has confirmed to EW that Lando won't be appearing in The Last Jedi, unless he's pulling some elaborate double bluff.

"He's not in the film and it was never really something that came up. I mean, I loved that character. It would have been fun to see him, but it's just not something that ever really had a place in the story," he explained.

Williams has provided the voice of Lando for Star Wars: Rebels in recent years and it sounds like he would be up for a live-action return to the franchise.

"Billy respects the studio and all involved in the decision but would be happy to be in any future Star Wars film if asked," his manager Brad Kramer outlined.

Of course, the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie Solo: A Star Wars Story does feature Lando, only in the younger guise of Donald Glover opposite Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo.

So maybe Williams will have a cameo in that one instead as some kind of framing device. We can but hope.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is released in UK cinemas on December 14 and US cinemas on December 15.
