Eastwood was attached to direct A Star Is Born for a long time before Bradley Cooper came onboard, and now the 88-year-old has told Extra TV that he was never sure about Gaga's casting.

"I thought he [Cooper] did a great job. A lot of things that I wasn't sure about… like he wanted [Lady Gaga]… I wasn't sure she was right for it, but I think she is stunning in it."

That's certainly some high praise, considering Eastwood is one of Hollywood's true elite members.

Meanwhile, Cooper has spoken admiringly about Gaga's work ethic, saying she was "ready to put the work in".

"We had to fight to get this movie made and so I felt early on that she was ready to put the work in to be great and to give an incredible performance," he explained.

"When I decided that I wanted to do the film, we hadn't created Ally and created Jack, and really you go on an instinct - and then you hope that the work ethic is there so that you can see that instinct come to life and fruition and it can grow. She did all those things."

Gaga's performance has now garnered her a nomination at next year's Golden Globe Awards, but the big question still remains: will this lead to an Oscar?
