A Close-Up View of Pu'u O'o's Lava Flow

Puʻu ʻŌʻō, a volcanic cone in Mount Kilauea’s eastern rift zone, has been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983. Late last week, fresh breakouts of lava brought impressive shows, especially with the sun down and the river of lava glowing over the mountain’s flow fields. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the fresh flows were not threatening any buildings.
