People living close to the scene of a huge blaze have been told to close all windows and doors and avoid the area. Firefighters are currently battling a fire at a derelict building in Southport.

Emergency services were called to a fire at a former health centre located at the corner of Albert Road and Park Road West during the early hours of the morning.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the scene at 2.46 a.m. to find the four-story building, measuring approximately 20 by 30 meters, with its upper floor and roof engulfed in flames.

Four fire engines and two aerial appliances are currently in use. A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “The incident has been divided into sectors, with firefighters tackling the fire from the ground using main branch hoses and from above with aerial appliances.

"Merseyside Police are also on-site, and both Albert Road and Park Road West have been closed.” Authorities are urging people to avoid the area due to heavy smoke, and nearby residents and businesses have been advised to keep doors and windows shut.
