Closing date confirmed for Bonmarché on struggling town shopping street
Another store will depart from a struggling shopping street in a Nottinghamshire town as its closure date is confirmed. Bonmarché, on Front Street, Arnold, will close in just a few days due to rent increases.
This follows the closures of three neighbouring units in recent months - Nene's Flowers, Arnold Top Clean and Sully's Bistro. Posters on Bonmarché's windows inform shoppers that the store's last day of trading will be Saturday, September 21.
The closure announcement comes six weeks after Gedling MP Michael Payne wrote to Bonmarché's retail director asking for the reconsideration of the then-potential closure. In his letter, sent on August 5, Mr Payne expressed his concerns regarding the closure's "significant" impact on the community.
His letter reads: "Bonmarché has been part of the community for many years, offering essential service to numerous residents, including those with limited mobility who find it difficult to shop elsewhere or prefer not to shop online. The store has also been a vital source of employment for many dedicated staff members who have consistently contributed to the company and local area.
"Given the considerations, I ask you to explore all available options to maintain the store's presence in Arnold. The potential loss of this store from our local high street would significantly impact our community."
The Labour MP added that he was committed to supporting the shop in remaining open. Nottinghamshire Live has approached Bonmarché for comment.
