Lloyds Bank has confirmed the exact date its branch in Royston will be closing its doors. The company confirmed the news in a statement to customers.

News of the closure comes as many banks across the UK have either shut or announced they will be shutting branches in the next few months. This is due to a rapid decline in footfall and in-person visits.

The Royston bank, on The Cross, will shut for good on December 3, 2024. It was initially due to close in September of this year, but the date has been pushed back.

A Lloyds spokesperson said: "Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch. Most customers are now using our Mobile Banking app, Internet Banking or calling us instead. This means they are using branches, including our Royston branch much less. Because of this, we'll be closing our Royston branch."

The bank found that 33 per cent of customers who used the branch regularly used other Lloyds banks as well. They also found that there was a 28 per cent of customers used the Royston branch and the Post Office in a 12 month period ending April 2023.

Lloyds Bank confirmed that a Banking Hub will be opening in the town, which customers will be able to use to pay in and withdraw notes and coins from their accounts as well as get a balance. The company said that the branch would not close until the new hub is open.

Once closed, the nearest Lloyds banks available to customers will be at Cambridge University on Sidney Street, and Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. More information can be found on the bank's website here.
