A plant-based cafe has announced it will be closing for good at the end of this month after a little more than a year in business. The Allotment Kitchen and Diner confirmed on Tuesday, July 9, that the business would close in a matter of weeks.

Located on the new Gusto Homes development off Station Road in Collingham, The Allotment officially opened in June 2023.

Owner Gemma Whitelock explained at the time that she prefered to look at things "from an allergy perspective" and said it was more about being "veg-focused" than it was about being a "vegan" cafe. The Allotment prided itself on all its products being nut-free as well as suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Ms Whitelock said: "It is with great disappointment that we announce the closure of The Allotment Kitchen & Deli in Collingham at the end of July 2024."

She went on to say that they "have achieved so much" since opening, including supporting the local food pantry, providing "nutritionally balanced" meals to local sporting teams, and hosting special events and supper clubs for the community.

She added: "Sadly, the current climate has made it difficult for the hospitality sector. This combined with the location of our space and the type of offer that we provide has resulted in us having to make the difficult decision to close our doors.

"We know that plant-based food is a growing area and the public need for more sustainable ‘plant focussed’ options will be something that we will see more of. We were just a little too ahead of our time for the current market.

"I’d like to thank Gusto for their support with this project and for taking the risk for such a forward-thinking idea. We know that the needs of village will be at the heart of any decision for the space moving forward.

"We have met some truly lovely people through this venture, and we know that we have helped lots of people to see how tasty plant-based food can be if it is done well. Thank you to everyone who has visited us over the last year. We truly appreciate your support."
