After the brilliant surprise-attack that was 10 Cloverfield Lane, it looks like the Cloverfield expanded universe (the 'Cloververse'?) could be having the odd hiccup.

The next instalment – previously announced as The God Particle – has been pushed back again from February 2 to April 20. It was previously slated for October 27, 2017.

The movie is the second feature from director Julius Onah and stars Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as astronauts on board a space station who find themselves stranded when they accidentally make the Earth vanish. Ooops!

We have no idea how this will fit into the wider world of the Cloververse, which at the moment just comprises the New York-set monster movie original and the follow-up 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was directed by Dan Trachtenberg and set in a bunker.

Very little else is known about the project, which JJ Abrams continues to oversee and produce. It's not even confirmed whether it will retain the working title 'The God Particle' - we'd expect it to have some Cloverfield tie-in in some way, even if it's The God Particle: A Cloverfield Story.

Abrams is no stranger to franchises and expanded universes – he directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens and has picked up the reins on the as-yet untitled Episode IX after the departure of original director Colin Trevorrow.
