Full time! Club Brugge 1-5 Man City

19:39 , Marc Mayo

Not your typical cruise to the finish for Pep Guardiola’s side, who were not allowed to take their eye off the ball at any moment by this Brugge team and gave as good as they got.

The quality in attack made the difference, with Mahrez bagging twice and goals for Cancelo, Walker and Palmer.

19:36 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Sterling again goes close. He really wants that sixth.

Four minutes of injury time.

19:34 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Vormer is the latest to burst forward, the captain turning the ball goalwards from a tight angle and finding Ederson suddenly very big in front of him.

19:31 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: Chance!

Substitute Dost puts a decent opening wide at the near-post.

The way this game is being played, there is still time for another, say, three goals?

GOAL! Club Brugge 1-5 Man City | Mahrez

19:29 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Mahrez finishes off on the counter. A frenzied finish!

19:27 , Marc Mayo

82 mins: A cross from the right cuts behind the City defence and a deflection takes it to Vanaken, who finishes with aplomb into the bottom corner.

GOAL! Club Brugge 1-4 Man City | Vanaken

19:26 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: The pressure tells as Brugge get on the board.

19:24 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: There is a save for Ederson!

De Ketelaere heads down and hard after a cross from the right but the goalkeeper is ready to palm it wide for a corner.

19:22 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Sterling should make it five. Set free down the left, he opts to shoot and then shoot again after his first effort is saved.

Neither go in, and the pass for a tap-in was on...

19:19 , Marc Mayo

74 mins: Ederson is called into action to smother a ball into the box. He’s only faced one shot all night (and that was off-target).

19:16 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: They aren’t finished yet. Sterling launches a volley from 18 yards and it flies wide.

Fernandinho is next to come on, for Rodri.

19:12 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Sterling pulled the ball back and Palmer, in acres of space, cooly controls and curls it home from 18 yards.

What a moment for the 19-year-old!

GOAL! Club Brugge 0-4 Man City | Palmer

19:12 , Marc Mayo

67 mins: Straight off the bench and onto the scoresheet for Palmer!

19:10 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: Grealish is flattened by Balanta in a mid-air collision which earns the Brugge man a booking. The physio is waved on but Grealish is fine.

19:09 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: The visitors have knocked it into cruise control for the final half hour, yet still look like they have another goal or two in them.

Sterling and Palmer are introduced for Foden and De Bruyne - who gets a good reception from the Belgian fans.

19:04 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: That was Walker’s first Champions League goal, and sixth in total for City. A true collector’s item.

19:02 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: With that, we have some changes. Laporte and Silva are off for Ake and Gundogan.

Almost immediately, Foden runs through and has a one-on-one denied by Mignolet.

18:59 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Walker provides the underlapping run to De Bruyne, receives the devastatingly simple through ball and rockets his effort in at the far-post.

They make it look so easy.

GOAL! Club Brugge 0-3 Man City | Walker

18:58 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: Walker makes it two goals for the full-backs!

18:57 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: A bit of flashiness from Mahrez betrays Silva when he needed a stronger touch to tee him up on a smart counter.

The one-two backheel didn’t come off and Brugge come away with the ball, just failing to ignite a chance on goal.

Fairly end to end, this one.

18:52 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Chance!

City straight back to it as Mahrez breaks down the right. Grealish dummies the cross and Foden looks like he takes a stud to the upper leg after not quite connecting with his shot.

Second-half begins! Club Brugge 0-2 Man City

18:50 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: And we’re off...

18:50 , Marc Mayo

The teams are back out, prepare for the second-half...

18:47 , Marc Mayo

A win for City would be a perfect result ahead of PSG’s clash with RB Leipzig, which kicks off in just over an hour’s time.

The live table has Pep’s men top of Group A, two points clear of Brugge and PSG.

18:39 , Marc Mayo

That was Mahrez’s fourth goal against Club Brugge, having netted against them in Leicester’s Champions League campaign five years ago.

The Belgians are his favourite victim in the competition, his tally now surpassing the three he has versus PSG - and this is only his third game against Brugge.

HALF-TIME! Club Brugge 0-2 Man City

18:35 , Marc Mayo

45+3 mins: It has not been all City but the Premier League side have certainly deserved their lead.

Brugge have grown as the game’s gone on, but the visitors simply have the class and that late penalty could prove enough to seal the win.

In fact, it was almost three before the break, De Bruyne and Mahrez going close.

18:32 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: No doubt about the foul, as Nsoki lunged in after Mahrez had leapt on a loose ball - and has since been booked after the restart.

Also no doubt about the spot-kick, as Mahrez aimed hard and low with Mignolet diving the wrong way.

Three minutes added on.

GOAL! Club Brugge 0-2 Man City | Mahrez (pen)

18:30 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: Mahrez brushes himself down, and... Scores!

18:29 , Marc Mayo

42 mins: Penalty!

City can make it two after a clear foul on Mahrez.

18:27 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: Brugge stepping up to City once again with De Ketelaere standing over a corner, which he whips just over the leaping forwards.

18:26 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: Phil Foden made it 11 Champions League goal involvements since the start of last season with that assist.

That is the most of any City player and ties Kylian Mbappe for the competition’s second-best, with only Erling Haaland (13) totalling more.

18:22 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: City are hardly slowing down and almost force a second through Walker’s run to the byline.

Brugge continue to up their game however, Lang swinging in a corner that requires some stretched defending to clear.

18:19 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Straight after the goal, Laporte is booked for a challenge 35 yards from his goal.

Looking back, it was a delightful ball by Foden over the top to find Cancelo. City have targeted that left flank all night and had an opening denied by a great Sobol tackle moments before, after a cross from Grealish.

GOAL! Club Brugge 0-1 Man City | Cancelo

18:16 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Joao Cancelo breaks the deadlock!

18:14 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: Chance!

Silva scurries free down the left, but is later proved offside, and turns it back to De Bruyne on the penalty spot.

The Belgian’s effort is thoroughly below expectations and straight at the keeper, even if it wouldn’t have counted.

18:12 , Marc Mayo

24 mins: Into the second quarter of the game, City having dominated the first without fully testing Mignolet in the home goal.

Mata is booked for cleaning out Silva in the air. Clumsy rather than intentional.

18:09 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: Brugge load the box for a free-kick after Dias fells De Ketelaere, but punt the cross straight at Ederson.

18:07 , Marc Mayo

19 mins: The old tale about City needing a proper centre-forward may be popping up in tomorrow’s back pages if this continues.

A smart run by Cancelo down the left ends in a perfect pass across the face of the goal - and nobody is there to finish it off.

18:04 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: Credit to Brugge, when they do get the ball it’s hardly a case of lumping it cynically forward.

A swift counter almost finds a way through, until Walker covers across well, before more City pressure resumes.

18:01 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: Another opening... Foden races down the left channel and pings his effort into the side netting.

It’s surely only a matter of time before City lead?

18:00 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: Back of the net... but offside!

A training ground set-piece sees the ball sent to the back stick and guided across goal, for Rodri to finish.

But the flag is up and VAR takes a moment to confirm the tight call.

17:58 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: Grealish involved again, this time triggering the offside flag - which goes up late after City see through a slick move that would have won a corner.

17:57 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Back of the net... but disallowed.

Grealish puts an elbow in Mata’s back as they compete for a bouncing ball, sending the defender to the ground in a heap.

The City man lobs the ball home but the foul is given and Mata receives some treatment.

17:56 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: The Jan Breydel Stadium is positively jumping as Brugge get a foot back into the game.

There may be less than 30,000 inside, but these fans are showing it’s not how many of you there are, it’s what you do with it.

17:54 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: Chance!

Foden puts it on a plate with a low cross from the left but nobody is there to finish it off.

17:53 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: Nice link-up play between Foden and Grealish nudges City towards the Brugge goal, which has certainly looked the more under-threat so far.

Another dart by the England winger fails to earn a free-kick after a seemingly clear trip on the edge of the area. Did Grealish go down too easily?

17:50 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Early City pressure and they think they should have a free-kick after Balanta bumps Jesus off the ball.

There have been a couple of thrusting challenges put about early on by the hosts, which is livening up this boisterous crowd even more.

17:47 , Marc Mayo

1 mins: Both sets of players take the knee before kick-off, which didn’t go down well with at least a pocket of the local support.

Kick-off! Club Brugge 0-0 Man City

17:46 , Marc Mayo

After a short stoppage to check the nets, we are underway in North-West Belgium.

The hosts are in their regular blue-and-black stripes and set up in a 3-5-2 formation, with City in all-white and a 4-3-3.

Just ten minutes to go until we hear that famous anthem and get going in Belgium...

17:30 , Marc Mayo

Pep Guardiola talks to BT Sport about his team selection, with Raheem Sterling dropped for Jack Grealish.

He says: “With the selection for every game, the manager tries to do their best knowing that the guys on the bench could do the same [as the starters] and win the game as well.

“Don’t ask me why because I don’t know, we thought these players were the best for the start of the game.”

What City must contend with tonight...

17:23 , Marc Mayo

17:17 , Marc Mayo

It is a homecoming for Kevin De Bruyne tonight as he returns to Belgium.

The former Genk man faced Brugge eight times during his time at his first club - and boasts a good record in their meetings.

With five wins, a draw and two defeats, the midfielder also scored three and set up another three goals. However, he did get sent off for two bookable offences after only 20 minutes of a December 2010 encounter.

17:05 , Marc Mayo

Could we see some more of Cole Palmer tonight?

Pep Guardiola has had his say on the teenager, who appeared for a second Premier League game off the bench on the weekend.

The boss said: “Step by step, but he's already two seasons training with us, and is completely involved in the dynamic of the group, the way we want to play. He extended his contract for the next years because we believe a lot in him. We know his attributes.”

Palmer is on the bench again tonight.

16:47 , Marc Mayo

A bit of a surprise as Club Brugge captain Vormer, who scored both goals in Friday’s 2-0 win over Kortrijk, is on the bench.

The 33-year-old dead-ball specialist may not be seen as the ideal man to sit deep and chase this City team while they have the ball.

This five-man midfield picked by Philippe Clement is part of the same XI that beat RB Leipzig last month.

Here is the Club Brugge team starting tonight...

16:42 , Marc Mayo

Club Brugge XI: Mignolet; Mata, Hendry, N’Soki; Sobol, Rits, Balanta, Vanaken, Sowah; Lang, De Ketelaere.

Subs: Maouassa, Ricca, Izquierdo, Vormer, van der Brempt, Dost, Mechele, Mbamba, Lammens.

Here is your line-up for Manchester City...

16:35 , Marc Mayo

Man City starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Dias (C), Laporte, Cancelo, Rodrigo, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Foden, Mahrez, Grealish

Subs: Steffen, Carson, Ake, Sterling, Gundogan, Jesus, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Palmer.

Here are the details for tonight’s game:

Date: Tuesday 19th October

Kick-off: 5:45pm BST.

Venue: Jan Breydel Stadium

Past meetings: None. The two teams have never played competitively before.

16:15 , Marc Mayo

Pep Guardiola has confirmed he will make a late decision on both Ederson and Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian duo flew straight to Belgium following their international excursions, while Ferran Torres remains the only lengthy absence after suffering a foot injury while away with the Spanish national team.

16:12 , Marc Mayo

Manchester City predicted XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Dias, Zinchenko, Rodri, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Jesus, Grealish, Foden.

The Standard's Prediction

16:10 , Marc Mayo

City, despite their riches in attacking midfield, are up against a side who managed to keep PSG’s famed front three largely at bay during Matchday 1.

For that reason, it’s hard to see a team without a fixed star striker managing to rack up the goals in the same manner they did against Leipzig.

Still, that’s not to say they absolutely cannot score and surely their tendency to dominate possession will create chances, albeit not in the way many might expect considering the difference in resources between the two sides.

Prediction: Manchester City to win 2-1.
