A road in Co Tyrone was closed on Sunday night after a lorry transporting live animals caught fire.

Images from the scene showed smoke billowing from the truck carrying chickens with several escaped animals milling about on the Benburb Road in Moy, Co Tyrone.

Staff from a nearby factory are believed to have helped round up the animals that escaped while vets were also in attendance. It's not known what caused the vehicle fire which occurred between The Square and Moy GAA Pitches.

A statement on Police Mid Ulster's Facebook account said: "The Benburb Road in Moy is currently closed between The Square and Moy GAA pitch due to a vehicle fire with a large number of live animals aboard.

"A recovery operation is underway and is likely to last a number of hours.

"We would respectfully ask people to avoid the area at this time and would advise members of the public that qualified vets are on scene and dealing with the matter and that no further assistance is required.

"Thank you for your co-operation."
