Coast Guard Rescues Injured Sailboat Crew From Rough Waters off Long Island

A US Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced four men from a disabled sailboat tossed by rough seas 80 nautical miles south of Montauk, New York, on Sunday, May 8, officials said.

The mariners aboard the 39-foot sailing vessel Calypso had sustained injuries “due to heavy sea conditions” during their journey from Bermuda to Connecticut, the Coast Guard reported, and only possessed texting abilities and an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon).

According to the Coast Guard, Air Station Cape Cod medevaced the Calypso crew and brought them onshore in Gabreski, New York, where they were “transported to a higher level of care.”
