SAFETY concerns for a person spotted close to the edge of Culver Cliff led to a large scale search operation.

Bembridge RNLI's inshore lifeboat was called out at 4.35pm to assist the Bembridge and Ventnor coastguard rescue teams in the search for a person, spotted perilously close to the edge of Culver Cliff, this afternoon (Saturday).

On reaching Whitecliff Bay, the lifeboat conducted a shoreline search of the cliff area between the bay and The Nostrils, to the west.

Conditions off-shore were tricky, described by the crew as 'lively' in the F6 breeze.

With no sign of anyone in the sea, two of the crew then went ashore to check the ledges under the cliff, while the rescue teams ccontinued to search for someone on the upper part of the cliff.

With no one found, the lifeboat crew was eventually stood down by Solent Coastguard at 5.45pm.
