A cocaine dealer has provoked outrage after he was able to enjoy a luxury spa break fewer than three years into his 10-year sentence.

Luke Jewitt, 33, who was convicted of helping to run a £5.2m smuggling ring, was pictured posing in the Jacuzzi with his mum and relaxing on a massage bed.

He was jailed in 2014 for his role in the drug gang but four years into his sentence, he has been allowed out on day release.

He is believed to have spent the day at the Santai Spa in Birmingham for Mother’s Day, at the end of March.

The spa boasts an outdoor jacuzzi with lake views, salt cave and mosaic hot-stone loungers. Packages at the luxury venue cost up to £140 per day.

His luxury outing was condemned by Boris Johnson, the former Foreign Secretary, who writes in the Telegraph: "This man was a kingpin of a sophisticated drugs importation and distribution network. He was pushing huge quantities of cocaine and cannabis on to the streets - and was convicted after being caught with 3.69 tonnes of the stuff.

“He has served fewer than three years of a 10 year sentence.

“What the hell is he doing, living it up at the weekend in a Jacuzzi, with his mum?”

It comes amid wider calls from families of knife crime victims, who have questioned how their attackers have been released half way through their lengthy sentences.

Jewitt’s brother Jamie was on Love Island and is dating Camilla Thurlow. He was released from his sentence at Birmingham Prison on temporary license in March.

He was caught after drugs detectives seized 3.69 tonnes of cocaine and cannabis - worth £4.6million - hidden behind furniture in a lorry on an Essex industrial estate. The drugs had been imported from Malaga, Spain.

Police also found £600,000 worth of cocaine in a taxi. Eight members of the gang were jailed in total.

Jewitt’s life of crime inspired The Corrupted, a thriller written by his childhood friend Nick Moorcroft which has now been turned into a film starring Hugh Bonneville and Timothy Spall.

In a recent interview, Jewitt insisted he was a reformed man, telling young people thinking of getting involved with the drugs trade to ‘get your head down’ instead.

A prison service spokesperson said: “Release on license is only granted towards the end of an offender’s prison sentence following a thorough risk assessment.

“All are subject to strict conditions which 99 per cent of offenders abide by — with those who do not facing a return to a closed prison.”

Being released on licence allows a prisoner to reintegrate into the community and help rebuild family ties.
