You could unwittingly be sitting on an absolute fortune.

That's because the coins in your possession could be worth a lot more than you'd expect. TikTok user @coincollectingwizard shared a tip about a coin worth keeping an eye out for.

In a clip, they shone a spotlight on a pre-decimal UK coin with a staggeringly low mintage of only 166,000.

In layman's terms, a coin's mintage determined the maximum number of pieces that have been produced. So the lower the mintage, the more rare coins are likely to be!

The money geek said: "Half crowns from this date have 92.5% silver in them too, which means it will also hold a silver value too."

The half crown, a British coin valued at two shillings and six pence, has been around since 1549. They added: "So if you are lucky enough to find a half crowned dated 1905 then you are looking at £9,000 in uncirculated condition.

"Even if the coin isn't the best quality, it can still sell for £500, £1,500 and even £4,000 so it really does depend on the condition with the one."

The video has garnered plenty of attention online since it was posted – and people were pleased to be in the know about the valuable coins. One said: "Great video mate."

Others weren't so lucky, though. A disappointed commenter said: "Shame, my oldest is 1916."

So will you be diving down the back of your sofa to find one of the rare pieces? It's definitely worth a go, we'd say, as you could make thousands!
