Severe cold weather has gripped the UK, with overnight temperatures predicted to plunge to as low as minus 10C in some areas.

The Met Office and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have issued a severe cold weather alert for England, as they warned the plummeting temperatures could increase health risks to vulnerable people and disrupt deliveries.

According to the latest weather report, in the North West today, the temperature will be 3°C with some cloud developing during the afternoon, with the chance of a few wintry showers, mostly in the east.

Winds will be light inland but breezy on the coasts, and feeling bitterly cold. Later tonight, a few wintry showers will develop, but dry overnight with prolonged clear spells.

It will be another cold and frosty, but sunny start to Friday and cold throughout the day with temperatures only reaching low single figures. There will be a small chance of a wintry shower near coasts, but some sunshine inland.
