It was barely more than a couple of weeks ago when temperatures in the Hull and East Yorkshire area were hitting the high teens but a proper taste of winter is now on the way.

The Met Office is forecasting a "major change in the weather " from this weekend with an early cold spell arriving that will bring snow and ice to parts of the country. Meanwhile, daytime temperatures will struggle to climb higher than around 4 or 5C by Tuesday and Wednesday with blustery winds making it 'feel' more like -2 or -3C at times.

It's expected to stay cold through the week and into next weekend with early indications suggesting the mercury may finally climb to around 8 or 9C by the following week.

Though it'll certainly be chilly in our area, the current forecast suggests it's unlikely we'll see much - if any - snow, but sub-zero overnight temperatures could bring some frosty conditions at times.

A Met Office weather warning is in place for large parts of northern England, including much of North Yorkshire close to the East Riding border, suggesting there is a "small chance of disruption from snow and ice" between 10am on Monday and 10am on Tuesday.

In the warning area, spells of rain, sleet and snow are likely during Monday and overnight into Tuesday morning. There is a chance of snow settling at lower levels but this is "very uncertain".

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks explains: “A notable early winter cold spell will arrive across the north from Sunday and will likely reach all parts of the UK by midweek.

“Temperatures will drop as a northerly airflow develops, bringing in colder Arctic air. This introduces the possibility of snow, initially over high ground in the north from Sunday, with gusty winds also a potential hazard. As the cold air spreads south, wintry weather is possible more widely, and a snow and ice warning has already been issued for parts of Scotland and Northern England for early next week.

“Updates to the warnings for wintry hazards are likely, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
