A US woman was left sporting the ultimate up-do after she stepped outside in the freezing cold with wet hair.

Taylor Scallon, who lives in Iowa, shared the hair-raising footage on social media two days ago – and the 13-second clip has since been viewed 1.7million times.

The Midwest has been hit hard by the polar vortex, and its these extreme weather conditions that caused Taylor’s wet hair to set in an upright position.

She shared the clip on Twitter with the caption: ‘Is Iowa really THAT cold?’

And while the footage has raised plenty of smiles, the extreme cold has had tragic consequences for many.

The New York Times reports that 21 people have so far died as a result of the bitterly cold weather, which reached lows of -49 degrees Celsius earlier this week.

One of them, Michael Belz, was a student at the University of Iowa. He was found unconscious outside his dorm building on Wednesday morning and died later in hospital.
